Circuit Court vs. District Court in Baltimore City

If you have a personal injury case in Baltimore City, the judge who hears your case depends in large part on which court the lawsuit is filed in.

The Baltimore City District Court handles civil claims involving $30,000 or less, along with traffic, landlord-tenant, criminal, and other matters. There are no jury trials in Maryland District Court. The judge is the judge and jury and decides what the award should be, if any. The benefit of District Court is that it is efficient. You get a much earlier trial date, and there are no depositions, pretrial conferences, etc. To oversimplify it a bit, you file your lawsuit, answer interrogatories, and go to trial. Our lawyers no longer handle District Court claims anymore, but we did at one time, trying hundreds of cases.

The Baltimore City Circuit Court handles larger civil cases and is where jury trials are held. This is where our lawyers litigate serious personal injury, medical malpractice, and wrongful death lawsuits in Baltimore City.

Baltimore City uses a differentiated case management system for civil lawsuits. The court’s published civil case management plan places motor torts, medical malpractice cases, professional malpractice cases, and most other tort claims on what is called a civil track.
