In 2016, there have been at least two lawsuits filed in Maryland against Golden Living Center facility in Cumberland.

In August, 2016, a case was filed against the Cumberland facility. The plaintiff is the case alleges she was admitted to the center with limited mobility, and that a few days after she is admitted, while being moved from her bed to the bathroom, she falls face first and strikes her eye on the bed.

In February 2016, a wrongful death case was filed against the same Cumberland facility. In this case, a man resides at the facility for seven months with some cognitive issues but without any signs of distress. However, one day, he is given another resident's medication. The staff informs the man's daughter thirty minutes later about the medication error, involving five medications. The man's daughter files a wrongful death claim, alleging that the medications administered to her father resulted in his death.

There are a few verdicts and settlements against Golden Living Center outside of Maryland.

  • 2012, Pennsylvania: $220,000 Settlement. A 74-year-old man resides in Mt. Lebanon, a Golden Living Center facility. While residing there, he is unable to bear weight and a mechanical lift is used every time he is transferred between his bed and another chair. One day, he is asphyxiated by the side rail of his bed, as the rail is not tightly secure. This causes his death. The parties settle for $220,000 before trial.
  • 2011, Pennsylvania: $32,500 Settlement. Plaintiff resides at a Golden Living facility, Mt. Lebanon, as an incapacitated individual due to suffering a hemorrhagic stroke and significant cognitive impairment. One day, while interviewing the plaintiff, defendant allowed a media crew into their facility to interview Plaintiff, and the interview is subsequently played on the news without plaintiff's consent or the consent of her legal guardians. Plaintiff also contends her legal guardians were never contacted before the interview. As a result, plaintiff suffered emotional distress as her privacy was invaded. She alleges that her image and medical information was broadcasted without her consent. The parties settle for $32,500.
  • 2010, Pennsylvania: $80,000 Settlement. An 88-year-old male is given solid foods by the nursing staff at the nursing home facility where he resides. However, shortly after, he dies from aspiration pneumonia. His estate alleges that the nursing staff failed to following aspiration precautions, failed to conduct a respiratory assessment and failed record his pulse oximetry. The defendants deny liable and argue that its staff did not do anything to cause the man's condition. The parties settle for $80,000 before trial.
  • 2009, Alabama: $2,500,000 Verdict. A 62-year-old male is residing at defendant nursing home facility after suffering two strokes. His Estate alleges that the defendants failed to make sure that his catheter was properly secured and failed to supervise the aids in using the proper technique while turning the specific patient, and that this led to his death. The defendants denied any traumatic injury, and alleged that the man's death was not caused by their negligence. A jury awarded the man's Estate $2,500,000.
  • 2009, Pennsylvania: $122,500 Settlement. A woman is being transferred from her wheelchair to her bed at defendant nursing home. During this process, she falls and an x-ray is done revealing no fracture. However, an x-ray done three days later identifies a femur fracture requiring surgery. One year after this event, the 87-year-old woman dies. Her Estate alleges that the nursing home failed to properly supervise their staff, failed to use a lift to safely move the decedent, and failed to provide the proper standard of care. They also allege that they failed to properly assess the woman's fracture and that this delay in treatment caused the woman's health to decline, resulting in a heart attack and several post-surgical complications. All of this led to her death. Before trial, the parties settled for $122,500.
