CalvertHealth Medical Center is a private, nonprofit, community owned hospital in Prince Frederick, Maryland. The hospital opened in 1919 and was known for many years as Calvert Memorial Hospital. The hospital and health system adopted the CalvertHealth name in 2017, and the hospital is now known as CalvertHealth Medical Center.

CalvertHealth has grown considerably since it opened more than 100 years ago. The health system now reports close to 1,200 employees and more than 250 medical providers in more than 45 specialties.

How Much Is a CalvertHealth Medical Malpractice Case Worth?

There is no special settlement formula for a medical malpractice case against CalvertHealth. The value of the case depends first on the injury. A case involving permanent brain damage, paralysis, a serious birth injury, amputation, or death is obviously worth more than a case involving an injury that eventually resolves.

The amount of future medical care and lost income can also drive the value of the claim. In a catastrophic injury case, those economic damages can be enormous. Maryland places a cap on certain noneconomic damages in medical malpractice cases, but there is no similar cap on past and future medical expenses or lost earnings.

The identity of the defendant can matter too. Sometimes CalvertHealth itself is a defendant. In other cases, the real claim may be against an emergency room doctor, surgeon, radiologist, hospitalist, obstetrician, or another medical provider who works for a separate practice. That can affect the insurance coverage available, how the case is defended, and ultimately how settlement negotiations play out.

Venue also matters. A malpractice case filed in Calvert County is going to be evaluated in part based on what both sides think a Calvert County jury is likely to do. But venue is only one piece of the case. A weak case does not become valuable because of where it is filed, and a strong malpractice case does not suddenly become a bad case because it is in Calvert County.

So if you are trying to determine what a CalvertHealth malpractice case is worth, the important questions are the severity of the injury, the strength of the negligence and causation evidence, future medical needs and lost income, who the defendants are, and where the case will actually be tried. Looking at an average malpractice settlement number without answering those questions tells you very little.

CalvertHealth Patient Safety and Quality Ratings

The more recent awards are probably more useful. CalvertHealth received an A in the Spring 2026 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. The hospital also received a 5-star overall hospital quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in 2026.

CalvertHealth has received the American Heart Association’s Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for stroke care for 13 consecutive years. It was also named one of Becker’s Great Community Hospitals in 2023, 2024, and 2025, and was named one of Fortune and Premier’s Top 100 Hospitals in the United States in 2025.

Credit where it is due. Those are good ratings. But they do not answer whether malpractice occurred in an individual patient’s case. A hospital can perform well on broad patient safety and quality measures and still have a doctor, nurse, or other medical provider make a serious mistake in a particular patient’s care.

About CalvertHealth Medical Center

CalvertHealth Medical Center’s Emergency Department uses a number of processes designed to get patients evaluated and tested more quickly. Walk in patients generally register and undergo triage before a bed or chair becomes available. When the ER is crowded, the hospital also uses a Rapid Medical Evaluation process that allows providers to begin evaluating patients and ordering testing and treatment while they are still in the triage or waiting area.

CalvertHealth Medical Center has been a Primary Stroke Center designated by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems since 2008. MIEMSS redesignated CalvertHealth as a Primary Stroke Center in 2023, with the current designation running through 2028.

In addition to the main medical center, CalvertHealth operates medical offices and other facilities throughout Calvert County, including locations in Prince Frederick, Dunkirk, Solomons and the Twin Beaches area.

CalvertHealth broke ground in 2017 on a $51 million expansion and renovation project. The new three-story patient tower and main entrance opened in July 2019. The project converted the hospital toward private patient rooms and substantially renovated the medical center. The remaining renovation work was completed after the tower opened.

Collecting Medical Records from CalvertHealth

Collecting records after treatment at CalvertHealth can sometimes be more complicated than people expect because different providers involved in the same hospital visit may maintain and bill for their records separately.

CalvertHealth Medical Center itself handles hospital medical records through its Health Information Management Department. The hospital currently accepts written medical record authorizations by email, mail, fax, or in person. CalvertHealth currently says that some patient requests may include a $6.50 flat fee, 76 cents per page copied, and actual mailing costs. Is 76 cents a page ridiculously high in 2026? Of course but this is what they are allowed to charge.

Like any hospital, this can be a laborious process. Invariably, your request is going to get ignored by one of the sub-providers in the hospital. First, you need to know when payment is due for the records collected. Sometimes, they require prepayment. But they just do not tell you that they do.

Once you have that straight, pick up the phone and start calling people. Document the call. Get the name of the person you are speaking to so you can call them back and say, “Gina, I talked to you last week, and you said you were going to send these records out. Do you know what the delay is about?” This last bit of advice is true anytime you are collecting medical records.
