Baltimore-Washington Medical Center

The purpose of this page is to give victims and other medical malpractice lawyers in Maryland information on bringing medical malpractice claims against University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center, formerly known as North Arundel Hospital.

University of Maryland Baltimore-Washington Medical Center

UM BWMC is a full-service hospital located in Glen Burnie, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and a member of the University of Maryland Medical System. In 2025, it will celebrate its 60th anniversary since opening in 1965 and its 25th year as part of UMMS.  Over that time, the facility has grown from a small community hospital into a 310‑bed regional medical center serving more than eighteen thousand inpatients and more than two hundred sixty-four thousand outpatient visits a year.

The hospital now includes an emergency department serving over one hundred thousand visits a year, a comprehensive labor and delivery unit, the Tate Cancer Center, and specialties such as neurology, neurosurgery, digestive disorders, orthopedics and robotics. It was the first hospital in the Baltimore area to use the da Vinci surgical robot. In 2025 the Tate Cancer Center earned reaccreditation as an academic comprehensive cancer program by the Commission on Cancer, an honor shared by only about thirteen percent of cancer programs nationwide.  The cardiac catheterization lab and outpatient cardiology facilities also received a major upgrade thanks to a 1.7 million dollar donation in 2023, and the procedural suite now includes advanced imaging and mapping features that reduce radiation exposure and improve patient outcomes

UM BWMC continues to expand beyond its walls. In 2025, it was recognized for two innovative population health initiatives that reduce readmissions and strengthen community care transitions, earning Circle of Honor awards from the Maryland Patient Safety Center.  It also partnered with the Cal Ripken Sr Foundation to launch a new mobile STEM center at a local elementary school, part of a multi-year program to encourage health and science careers among young students. New leadership took office on July 1 2025, with five community leaders appointed to the UM BWMC Board of Directors and Foundation Board, including a former county executive and a veteran physician leader from its obstetrics department.

The biggest competitor for BWMC is Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis. But the distance between the two hospitals is 18.3 miles.

Recent Patient Safety Developments and Risk Trends at UM BWMC

UM BWMC has made significant efforts in recent years to improve patient safety, reduce readmissions, and strengthen care transitions. In 2025, it received recognition from the Maryland Patient Safety Center for two initiatives that focused on decreasing hospital-acquired conditions and improving follow-up care after discharge. One program used remote monitoring and patient navigators to track high-risk patients after surgery, while another partnered with local primary care providers to reduce gaps in post-discharge treatment for chronic conditions.

Despite these advancements, medical errors still occur, and recent Maryland Health Care Commission reports indicate that UM BWMC has experienced an uptick in reported sentinel events in the surgical and emergency departments compared to 2023. These include delays in diagnosis, missed test results, and medication errors that resulted in patient harm. While the hospital has taken steps to address these issues—such as implementing new EHR alert protocols and expanding clinical staffing ratios—plaintiffs’ lawyers should understand that the hospital’s internal reforms, while laudable, do not insulate it from accountability when preventable harm occurs.

Where To File Baltimore Washington Medical Center Malpractice Lawsuits

UM BWMC is not one of the bad hospitals in Maryland. But like any large acute care facility, serious mistakes can happen that result in lasting injury or death. Plaintiffs must often file a lawsuit to maximize claim value or elicit a meaningful settlement. Most malpractice cases against UM BWMC are filed in the Anne Arundel County Circuit Court since the hospital is located in Glen Burnie. Anne Arundel County generally provides a fair but not overly plaintiff-friendly venue. Jurors there are thoughtful and compassionate, even if they are not eager to award large verdicts unless the situation clearly demands it.
