Maryland General Hospital | UMMC Midtown

Dealing With This Baltimore Hospital on Medical Malpractice Claims

Maryland General Hospital now uses the name University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus (UMMC). It is an acute care hospital in Baltimore, Maryland in Mt. Vernon that is part of the University of Maryland Medical Systems.

It has 200 beds, and practices in most areas, including general surgery, wound care, emergency medicine, cardiology, orthopedics, and obstetrics/gynecology. It is a teaching hospital, which means that much of the care is provided by medical residents. It has about 500 doctors and 1,100 employees.  The hospital is building a new seven-story, 107,000-square-foot center focusing on metabolic diseases across the street from UMMC at the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Linden Avenue. The new outpatient center will be adjacent to an existing parking garage.

UMMC moved its obstetric services about one mile away to the main UMMC campus in 2013.  The stated reason was a 50 percent decline in deliveries.  The fact that UMMC was middle of a birth injury lawsuit that later resulted in a $3 million verdict may have also contributed to the demise of their obstetric services.

Where To File Maryland General Medical Malpractice Lawsuits

Baltimore City is a good place for lawyers to file Maryland medical malpractice lawsuits. Our law firm has gotten numerous 7 figure verdicts and settlements in Baltimore City.  Baltimore City jurors have been to hospitals in the City and are not surprised to find out that doctors and nurses at these hospitals have been accused of medical malpractice.  These jurors are less likely to believe that it is impossible that a doctor would make a mistake.

UMMC is not a bad hospital.  The Midtown Campus was named a 2014–2015 Best Regional Hospital in Baltimore by U.S. News & World Report. But, like many hospitals, it has its fair share of screwups that lead to medical malpractice injury and wrongful death lawsuits.

UMMS is committed to expanding this hospital.  In 2017, UMMS got regulatory approval for a new, 10-story,  200,000-square-foot patient care center for its midtown hospital.  This $56 million addition should be ready by 2019.

Maryland General Hospital’s Defense Team

The University of Maryland Medical System has been defended by a who’s who of defense firms, including Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker; Morgan Carlo Downs & Everton; Whitford Taylor Preston; Chason, Rosner, Leary & Marshall; Waranch & Brown, Miles & Stockbridge,; and Pessin Katz. There are no bad apples in this barrel – all good advocates that know who to defend a health care provider negligence case.
