Calvert Memorial Hospital | Medical Malpractice Claims

Background

Calvert Memorial Hospital is a part of the Calvert Health System and is a private, not-for-profit, community-owned hospital. It has been in operation for more than 90 years, as it opened in 1919 in Prince Frederick, Maryland. The hospital currently employs 267 physicians and 1,000 employees. The hospital offers a range of services from acute, critical care to rehabilitation and home health services.

Calvert Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department uses a “direct-to-bed” approach. This means patients who arrive at the ER will not have to wait in the triage area out front. The nurse, doctor, and medical technician evaluate the patient together to help avoid separate steps after a patient arrives at the ER. They also use a “rapid medical evaluation” process if the ER does not have beds available, which gives providers the opportunity to see patients soon after triage to order tests and treatment to help reduce the patient’s wait time.

In addition to the ER, Calvert Memorial Hospital offers a variety of services, including:

  • Behavioral Health
  • Cancer Care
  • Cardiac Care (including anticoagulation clinic, cardiac catheterization, support services, and cardiac rehabilitation)
  • Community Wellness
  • Critical Care

The Endoscopy Center is one of the most comprehensive gastroenterological care facilities in the region, with three board-certified gastroenterologists and updated technology. The center performed about 3,500 endoscopic procedures last year.

Calvert Memorial Hospital has been a Primary Stroke Center, designated by Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems, since 2008, and treated 248 patients last year who experienced strokes. Additionally, there were more than 6,000 surgeries done by the 21 active surgeons at Calvert Memorial Hospital last year. The “specialty” surgeries at the hospital include neurosurgery, vascular surgery, orthopedic surgery, cancer surgery, laparoscopic procedures, cardiovascular procedures, oral/maxillofacial surgery, and otolaryngology.

Calvert Memorial Hospital has earned many rewards for patient care. In 2016, the hospital earned a 5-Star Distinction for Excellence in Treating Heart Failure and a 5-Star Distinction for Excellence in Treating Pneumonia. Also in 2016, it earned the Gold Plus Award for the fifth time for stroke treatment.

In 2015, Calvert Memorial was recognized in the top 10% of hospitals nationwide as a leader in patient safety, earning the 2015 Patient Safety Excellence Award in addition to a Most Wired award by the American Hospital Association. Calvert Memorial Hospital was named one of the best regional hospitals for geriatrics by the U.S. News and World Report in 2012-2013, and the Transitional Care Unit received a 5-Star Rating in 2012 by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

In addition to the main hospital, Calvert Hospital has medical offices in Dunkirk, Solomons, Twin Beaches, and Prince Frederick. Calvert Memorial Hospital is affiliated with Calvert Medical Imaging Center, Calvert Physician Associates, Chesapeake-Potomac Home Health Agency, Chesapeake Potomac Regional Cancer Centers, and Urgent Care Centers.

Calvert Memorial Hospital is in the process of expanding. Expansion plans include adding 50,000 square feet. The plan is a new three-story patient tower with 40 new private rooms as well as an 18-bed outpatient observation unit. This $51 million project is set to begin in summer 2017 and conclude in 2020. You can expect that area of Prince Frederick to be a construction zone during those three years.
