It remains the only hospital in Howard County and has been a core part of the community since it opened its doors in 1973 as a small 59-bed short-stay facility. Over the past five decades, it has grown alongside its community. Today, the hospital operates as a mid-sized regional medical center with 225 staffed beds and is fully integrated into the Johns Hopkins Medicine system.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"662\" data-end=\"1094\">The hospital provides services in obstetrics and gynecology, cardiology, cancer treatment, general surgery, orthopedics, and emergency medicine. Each year, the hospital handles around 30,000 inpatient admissions and sees close to 100,000 emergency room visits. Between 3,500 and 4,000 babies are delivered at the hospital annually. With more than 1,800 employees, it continues to rank as the fifth-largest employer in Howard County.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1096\" data-end=\"1852\">In recent years, the hospital has made major investments to meet growing health care demands in the region. In late 2024, the hospital opened a new 24-bed behavioral health unit, along with a nine-bed emergency behavioral health zone, significantly expanding its ability to serve patients in mental health crisis. Plans are also underway for a $28 million observation unit to further improve emergency department flow and reduce wait times. These developments reflect not only a commitment to modernizing care, but also increasing support from Howard County and the State of Maryland.
